Youth Cultural Exchange Program in Norway

In Norway the Au Pair program is regulated by the Ministry of Justice, the Directorate of Immigration (UDI) and the Norwegian Tax Administration.
The Ministry of Justice emphasizes that the purpose of the Au Pair scheme is cultural exchange. An Au Pair, a young adult from another country, shall be treated as a member of a Norwegian family and in this way get to know the Norwegian language and culture. In return, an Au Pair helps out with light housework and childcare. An Au Pair cannot work as an ordinary domestic help or childminder. An Au Pair cannot work for other employers or other families than, and cannot combine activity as an Au Pair with any other work, neither paid nor free.

Taxes

The Au Pair has to be registered with the Tax Office and receive a tax deduction card. The tax deduction card shows how much tax your employer should deduct from your pay. The standard deduction for foreign employees is 10% of your gross income from employment. Gross income is sum of pocket money, board and lodging and other benefits. The rate of free board and lodging is NOK 79 per day in 2012 year. But is possible to use the other of tax deduction
