Au Pair Program in Switzerland

The Federal Authorities of the Swiss Confederation are regulated the Au Pair Program in Switzerland. Since 01.01.2008 young persons have been allowed to work as Au Pairs only if they use the services of an Au Pair agency that is accredited by SECO.
An Au Pair is a young person, who will live and eat all meals with a host family, as a member of the family. His/her primary role will be to help take care of children, together with light housework.

Rules of entrance and stay in Switzerland

Everybody Au Pairs need L- Permit for Short-term Residents to stay in Switzerland for a limited period of time, if they have of an Au Pair contract valid from three up to twelve months (and work permit accordingly). The period of validity of the permit is identical to the term of the employment contract. L permit for short-term residents Au Pair has to receive in Registration Office (Einwohnerkontrolle) in the canton, where host family lives.
For Au Pairs from other countries the work permit is to be applied for and paid  by the host family before the Au Pair come. In order to obtain the Work Permit, registration for the language course must be made by the host family at a language school in their place of domicile. The work permit is distributed  the Office for Economy and Labour (Amt für Wirtschaft und Arbeit ).This process can take up to three months.
Au Pair from non EU/EFTA countries have possible to enter to Switzerland without visa.


At the beginning of the Au Pair's employment, the host family is obligated to register the Au Pair with the cantonal Compensation Office. Tax liability begins at 18 years of age. The family deduces from the gross wage the contributions for AHV/IV/EO/ALV (6,25%) and half of the costs of health insurance.
